Lynn Walker lived an extraordinary life of travel and adventure. Born Erlynn Iva Anderson in Salt Lake City the daughter of Ernest Anderson and Iva Potter Price, Lynn would become a true matriarchy in her own right. After the tragic loss of her mother when Lynn was five, Lynn was raised by her father and step mother in the Mormon church. A timeless beauty, Lynn competed in Miss Utah before heading to southern California to join her brother, serving the country as a real “Rosie the Riveter” in WWII. It was on the ski slopes of Colorado, she met the most handsome man she had ever seen and on July 2nd, 1948, Robert Carlton Walker smartly made her his wife. Little did she know the incredible life that awaited them.
From the Bahrain Islands, to Holland, to Brazil, to Libya, to Rhodesia and Malaysia (just to name a few) they lived all over the world, adding five children to their brood along the way. By day, they were the type of parents that threw the most amazing birthday parties that all the kids wanted to be invited to. By evening, they hosted friends and neighbors of all backgrounds fostering intellectual discussions into the wee hours.
Alongside her true love Bob, there was never a dull moment and it wasn’t too uncommon an occurrence to receive a telegraph from halfway across the world from him such as “Landed a plane in Uruguay… bring the kids and meet me here.” Their five children absorbed their lust for life all carrying on their legacy leading incredible adventures of their own. Bob and Lynn are survived by their loving children Robert Walker (Holland), Dana Twombly (Austin, TX), Pilar Albertson (Portugal), Erika Mitchell (Portland, OR) and John Walker (Cedaredge, CO) who will all happily share some unbelievable stories of the their own or their parent’s over a cup of tea.
Lynn was as naturally gifted with the earth and animals as she was people. In her day, she was a recognized leader in animal husbandry, breeding the most productive dairy cows on their farm in Rhodesia. By their retirement years in Texas together, she and Bob owned and operated ‘Berry Country’ growing the most delicious Baba berries, turning twenty five cuttings into over ten acres. Lynn could work magic in that Texas home, fitting seven adults and twelve grandchildren into their self built two bedroom, two bathroom home. All her grandchildren will attest that those were the best days of their lives playing in the red Texas dirt, treasure hunting for candy, sleeping under the stars and being shooed out of the kitchen by their grandfather “Big Papa”. Lynn was a determined visionary who surveyed a hundred acres of bramble bush and on a “hog” turned it into a paradise with lush lawns, Texas native flowers and an eight acre lake. That's what type of woman Lynn was. There was no problem too big that she didn’t roll up her sleeves and overcome it.
In her free time, Lynn read more books than are in a library and was an avid bridge player which she actively encouraged everyone, friends and family alike, to learn to play. Lynn’s grace, kindness and generosity extended beyond her kin to everyone she met and she has undoubtedly left her mark on countless life-long friends scattered across the globe. Her generosity was a staple; an avid gift giver never missing a chance to show others that she was thinking about them. To know Lynn was to truly love and respect her.
Lynn never forgot the sunsets over Africa and often reminisced over them when there was a particularly beautiful painted red sky over East Texas. She peacefully passed away on such an evening with grace and beauty in Athens, TX on August 23, 2020 with her daughter Dana and eternal friend Ginger by her side. Lynn joyfully joins her husband, Bob, in the afterlife where she promises to watch over all whom she loved with the same passion as she did in life. The five children, twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren that survive her will undoubtedly, from time to time, hear her whisper in their ear “You can do it!”.
Her family sends heartfelt gratitude to the community of Athens, the De Silvia family and her friendships at the Dottie Pirkle’s Duplicate Bridge Club who enriched her life dearly, giving her daily support, purpose and love. You can honor Lynn in her passing by showing kindness to strangers, working hard to achieve your dreams, sending a card to a loved one, learning to play bridge and remembering: Life is good!
